I enjoyed this visit, I am a shepherd with a small flock of mixed breeds. What I find interesting as I follow them around is that they seem to graze an area and then on their own (me following) they will go to a different area and not return to the original for perhaps a week. As if they know it needs a rest?
I‘ve observed and been told the same thing. Perhaps they don’t Like go back through an area that they recently defecated on if possible? Or just constantly seeking the freshest? Grasslands and herbivores evolved together, that bond runs deeper than we can fathom.
It’s definitely an aid to help with moves, you can do a similar thing with older sheep, the whole flock of younger will naturally follow. But perhaps it’s easier to train a goat to come to you. Bottle feeding your leader will establish a bond. It was just the single, and she seemed lonely. It many cases guardian dogs are necessary, but I’ve also seen llamas and donkeys used for this, and they can usually forage along with the herd rather than requiring dog food. These shepherds aren’t doing any baking or brewing, but definitely eat loads of bread! There certainly are shepherds in more remote places who bake bread and make cured meats for their shepherd meals !
