This is a test…..a test drive……….it’s just a ride. In an attempt to expand my ongoing project of documenting this world’s dairying and cheesemaking traditions, I am now writing through the medium of Substack. I will be publishing weekly newsletters and will eventually have a paid subscription option to allow people to contribute financially to my work. I also want to facilitate sharing of knowledge, to build a space for open discussion. I’m wondering what kind of content people would find valuable and what aspects of the posting I do on Instagram would be best to elaborate on?
Like the Milk Trekker project in general, I want this to evolve organically, it’s a free-flowing collective stew of ideas, ramblings, allowing my boat to drift according to currents that I’m only beginning to understand. It’s just a ride. The boat still floats although it has a few leaks. I paddle around towards things that look interesting, islands and promontories, throwing anchor for a little while and then moving on when I get restless. Go with the flow I say, but learn how to paddle. Learn when to paddle and how to read the tide.
Row row row your boat, gently down the stream.
Merrily merrily merrily merrily
Life is but a dream.
I want to share my writing and the things I’m learning on a more in-depth and lengthy tapestry. One of my favorite parts about posting on Instagram is the conversations that happen in the comments. But I feel that platform can be limiting and I want to bring some of it here for more discussion and sharing. I hope to be able to answer questions more fully, provide space to go into more detail, and allow others to do the same. I’d like to carve out the cave that doesn’t exist yet, for this to become A place for learning about natural cheesemaking methods, the milk fermentation traditions of various cultures, the sharing of endangered knowledge or forgotten traditions involving dairying, animal husbandry, cheesemaking and aging.
I’ve thought long and hard about what approach I want to take to seek funding to enable me to continue on this path, and to take it to the next level which will involve collaborations, more filming and photography, the hiring of interpreters and guides. I think this is a good place to start so that people who want to contribute can do so, I can practice writing in a more organized way, get feedback from readers. So please let me know what you think about all this by commenting below, share a link with people who might be interested and on your social media. It’s a scary, intruging, overwhelming, and interconnected world. Lets make the most of it.
